A Great Vacation-Folly Beach, S.C.

How do you celebrate 40 years of marriage?  You experience Charleston-Folly Beach, to be exact, with your family, of course! My parents celebrated 40 years of marriage this July.  My sister's family, my parents and our family came to Folly Beach, which is on the ocean outside of Charleston, for a weeks vacation on August 4-11th.  We had a wonderful day of flying on Saturday and met my sister in Chicago for the final leg of the trip.  The boys did a great job overall but only slept the last 5 minutes of the descent into Chicago.  We arrived in Charleston around 6:00 and headed straight to Folly Beach.  We pulled up to our house on the beach and the exploration began.  The boys call it our "new house" and love it!  It's a great house-3 levels.  We have the basement and Chase picked out his room where he and Owen sleep together.  The main floor has a great kitchen, sitting room, dining room and spacious sun room, along with 2 bedrooms.  My parents have the spacious and sunny upstairs room.

We were up and at 'em early Sunday morning.  The boys played with Jeff while we went to the grocery store to buy food for the week.  We went to the beach after that and had the best time ever!  The boys were amazed at the ocean waves and the vast amounts of sand.  They had a blast finding shell after shell after shell.  We ran up and down the beach and saw a Man of War jelly fish-which looked like a piece of plastic so Owen touched it. Thank goodness he didn't touch the tentacles!  It attracted a lot of attention on the beach.  Eventually a local saw us looking and came over and told us what it was.  That was right before someone almost threw it back in the ocean.  After we found out what it was it was buried nicely in the sand.

Nana and Papa came to the beach and Nana, Jeff, Chase and Owen and I went out deep and jumped the waves.  I held Chase and he and I got a lot of water to the face from those big waves!  He liked to have the back of his head to the waves so I bore the brunt of the water.  We had so much fun laughing, getting knocked down and enjoying the water.  Jeff buried the boys and Owen had fun discovering how very fine sand can drip.  Chase liked it when Daddy threw sand at him-hitting him right in the face one time.  Oops.

Early in the morning cuddles with Daddy

We went home to play and Jeff and I got to explore Folly while the boys napped.  We walked around looking at the local stores-which were all the same tourist type stuff.  We walked the huge Folly Beach Pier, which is the second largest on the Atlantic.  It was a pretty amazing structure.  It is 24 feet wide, extends more than 1,045 feet into the ocean and is 23 feet above sea level.  It was raining lightly at the time so there were not that many people out there.  There were a lot of fishermen though.

That night we went for a very nice dinner at  Blu and enjoyed the ocean's best fish-grouper, swordfish, scallops, etc.  We had great service and sat right by the ocean.  After dinner we went to the pier again and the boys got to run out some energy.  They loved watching the waves and surfers.  Of course we all watched the Olympics that night-a special treat.
Ready to go for dinner.  We got all the family pictures taken this night-they were out of the way and we were ready to go!

The boys were so in need of burning some energy-I'm glad they were able to take off and run on the pier.

It was a great time to surf-lots of people were out taking in the waves.

It was a great day and I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us.

What 4 years old means. . .

What does it mean to be a 4 year old Chase and Owen? Well . . .

It means they are more independent.  I'm amazed at how long they can play by themselves or with each other (most of the time with each other).  I can hear them talking to each other, talking to their animals and playing make believe.  They love their stuffed animals and will play "house" with them, they get sick and bring the animals to the doctor (me).  They are independent in putting their shoes on (most of the time) and can get dressed but it takes FOREVER!  They still "announce" each time they need to go to the bathroom and run there.  Then when they are done they yell, "All done Mommy/Daddy!"

Bedtime is a rigamarole.  I'm sure it is for everyone.  We go upstairs after gathering all the favorite toys of the day and blankies.  This takes about 10 minutes.  When we get upstairs there is a short game of hide and seek in which Jeff and I remind them that it's time to get ready for bed, not play.  We get jammies on, brush teeth (after chasing some more and sometimes hold them down), go to the bathroom and pick out 2 books.  We sometimes read on Owen's bed but most of the time Chase's and his room continues to be "home base".  The boys love to read and really listen well once we start reading.  Sometimes they don't like the book we chose and say, "Don't like this book".  Then we ask who wants Daddy.  Daddy then takes a boy to bed and does a little routine including, "high five, up high, in middle, down low, and bump it".  Mommy takes the other boys, scratches their back and sings, "Sunshine, Mommy Loves You, and sometimes Maker."  We pray and talk about our day then I give kisses and hugs and blow a kiss at the door. If any part of the routine is missed they let us know.  :)

They stay in bed pretty well.  I would say they have been out of bed 4 times total.  Once we were watching TV and I heard this clapping sound.  I turned around and they were standing in the toy room trying to get our attention! They think they are so cute (and they are) so it's hard not to smile and laugh.  They really do go to bed great!

In the morning we wake to, "All done bed!" screamed very loudly from their rooms.  They still do not get out of bed on their own-which we LOVE!  We have "omeal" with honey and "bimins" (oatmeal and vitamins) each morning.

They are fairly good eaters-eating most veggies and fruits.  However they are not real meat eaters and don't really care for grains.  We sometimes have to do some bribing to get them to eat. :)

They love all things boy-cars, trucks, crashing, swords, fighting, jumping, making a mess and yelling.  They are very curious about life and love to touch everything to see what happens.  Behavior overall continues to be really good.  They are loving kind little boys who love to have fun and laugh.  Of course we get the occasional disobedience, whining (which is the biggest problem), hitting, yelling.  They really don't like it when their brother yells at them-oh man, there is a crying fit if that happens.

They are wearing size 3T pants-4T falls right off.  They can wear 3 or 4 T shirts, though.

Chase and Owen know all letters and sounds and have for some time now-we can count to 20-40 depending on the day-missing 15 along the way.  Their language has developed so much in the past year that I'm amazed.  The other night in bed Jeff was having them name all the pictures in a book and they knew them all!  Some, I had no idea they knew.  They love to read books!  They love to explore the world and look at bugs and animals.  Bugs are a favorite for sure!

They have remained best friends!  When we play with other kids I need to remind them to include the other child because they are so happy with each other. In big groups of kids they stick together and Owen tends to need to know where Chase is at all times.

They are really really fast runners and are pretty coordinated, jumping, galloping, standing on one foot, etc. Owen is for sure more clumsy that Chase (just like his Mommy) and tends to get hurt more.

They love to sing songs-making up their own words.  They love to dance and Chase can't help himself-when he hears music his body just starts moving.  They really love dancing to Jeff's guitar playing.

The boys love church!  We tell them it's time to go and they yell, "Church!" It's so great.  They learn wonderful things there and are so well cared for.  They are starting to pray for things on their own and know the story of Jesus and how and why He died for us.  We were just reading about it a few days ago.  I said, "Why did Jesus die?"  Owen responded, "Because he loves us!"  Yes, Owen YES!

I'm so proud of my boys and their development, their personalities and how kind and loving they are to all.  God blessed us greatly.

Chase and Owen-Isms

Hockey Dokey = Walkey Talkey

Scratch my back on the inside even sing to me.

7-18-12:  Chase told me he loved me and I said, "That makes my heart warm."  I said, I love you too, Chase.  He said, "That makes my feet warm."

7-22-12:  I told Chase and Owen we were not going to take our blankies downstairs anymore.  If they wanted to cuddle they could go to their room and cuddle with their blankies.  Chase replied, "That's not a good idea."

Owen said, "Stop counting Mommy you boring me."

We were watching the Olympics with the boys and after about an hour Owen says, "I'm sick about this."  Meaning, I'm so bored of this!

"Hey Nana, I went big giant poop.  It came from my bottom."  Owen

Chase said, "Hey Mommy, I'm sitting on all my baby animals".  "Yes, Chase you are."  "Hey Mommy, I'm a babysitter. "  :)

Chase took a shower by himself tonight for the first time and he said, "I'm so so proud of myself."

Hot

I just learned on the news that we've had 22 straight days above 85, only 2nd to 1942. (I actually learned this about 2 weeks ago, so who knows what the new record is now).  It also hasn't been in the 70's at all for the whole summer.

It's been a hot hot hot summer.

I've had some really strange bug bites, too that don't seem to go away.  It drives me nuts.

Last night we had some fun in the hose helping Daddy wash his car.  Chase and Owen also had fun spraying themselves in the face with the hose!

We've been seeing a lot of this lately so I thought it was only fitting to include it. :)
I got Chase to show me how he sprayed himself in the face, it was so funny!
 Get ready Mommy!
 And GO!
 Post spray

The next day the kids found a big bug and spent time looking at it and trying to coral it.  They built a little fort for it.

These four played by the road with their dragons and cars and had so much fun getting dirty.

Unfortunately we got rain Saturday during the night so everyone left pretty early on Sunday.  We didn't get a picture of all the women and the kids.  We'll have to do that next summer at our second annual trip!  We also didn't get a picture at our potluck in the camper area where 2 of our friends were.  They were camping in style and we were all a bit jealous.

Thanks friends for the wonderful weekend!
