June 30
th,
The babies birth story begins on June 30th. We went to Abbott Northwestern Hospital at 3:00 because I was having some drooping of my face. I was pretty concerned as this isn't typical for me! :) The babies and I were assessed and found to be doing well. Because I was at 38 weeks the Dr. decided to admit me and start the labor process. After eating at McDonald's I was admitted at about 7:30 that night. During this time my face continued to get worse and I got very concerned. No one could tell me what was going on, but assured me I was
ok. A nurse came in around 9:30 and they gave me some medicine to begin labor.
July 1,
At 4:00 a.m. my water broke and labor pains began. At 6:30 they started
petocin and I began to dilate. I began to experience pain with my contractions and decided to get an epidural. At 9:00 I got the epidural, however it didn't work. By 11:00 I was in a lot of pain and was wondering why. The Dr. came in and discovered they had put the epidural into a vein, which is why it wasn't delivering the relief I wanted. The Dr. decided to do another epidural, however the anesthesiologist was in a c-section and couldn't get to me for at least 30 minutes. I had hit a wall and demanded something for pain. They gave me
nubain, which made me really goofy and sleepy. Right after giving me
nubain the anesthesiologist showed up and gave me the new epidural. After this I felt my legs go numb for the first time and was able to take small cat naps between nurse and Dr. visits. At some point a neurologist came in to talk to me to tell me I had Bell's Palsy. I was happy to hear I wasn't having a stroke. She put me on some drugs, talked to me about what to expect and when it should go away. I don't remember much of this, however, because I was so drugged up! The Bell's Palsy should resolve itself with time. At about 3:30 I was dilated almost to 10 and was very uncomfortable, as the epidural was wearing off again. The Dr. wasn't ready for me to start pushing so we held off. At 5:00 there was a shift change and a new Dr. came on. I was very ready to begin pushing, but she had to deliver another baby right then! About 5:30 they wheeled me to the OR (all twins at Abbott are delivered in the OR in case an emergency c-section is needed) and began to set things up. I was in extreme pain by this point and was ready to get the babies out. Still no Dr. Finally the nurses let me begin to push. About 5 minutes later the Dr. came in and we began actively pushing. Jeff was very helpful and got me through some of the worst pain. Finally at 6:11 Chase Robert was born and placed on my stomach. He was beautiful and I had some relief. The Dr. broke Baby B's water and I began pushing again. At 6:19 Owen James was born and once again I had a baby on my stomach to stare at in wonder. Both babies cried a little and then were quiet under the warmer. Jeff and I looked at each other, cried, laughed and were in awe at what had just happened. They were so perfect, just little bundles of joy and love. We got to our room that night about 10:30, Chase and Owen were given their first bath about 11:30 p.m. and Jeff and I slept very well that night! We feel so lucky to have such healthy and wonderful little babies to call our own. We know it has all been ordained by God and we praise Him.
Chase weighed in at 6lbs. 0 oz. and was 19 inches long. Owen was 5 lbs. 14 oz. and was 18.5 inches long. Both of them had very long fingernails and dark brown hair.
